We Are History In the Making: Alum Sherman B. Maddux

Going to the second grade and encouraged by his father, a dedicated civil rights activist, Mr. Maddux transferred from Lunenburg County Elementary to Kenbridge Elementary, one of three black students, two years before Lunenburg County schools were formally desegregated.  He graduated from Central Senior High, 1976, and was accepted to the University of Virginia when the percentage of minorities at UVA was less four percent.

His second year, he joined the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFROTC), Detachment 890, and upon graduation, summer 1980, was commissioned a second lieutenant to begin his active duty military career. During his career, Mr. Maddux, an Aircraft Maintenance Officer, Weapon Systems Acquisition Officer, Commander, and Civil Engineer, was assigned to installations throughout the Continental U.S., in several European countries, and two in Asia.

He separated from active duty in 1992, moving from Okinawa Air Base, Japan to settle in Marietta, Georgia, where he has worked for the Atlanta Committee for Olympic Games (ACOG), and several small companies to include his current company, NewTech.  He joined the Air Force Reserves in 1995 and retired in 2005, completing his military career of 24 years.  His responsibilities and job positions throughout his military and private sector career have been in management, specifically in the areas of defense systems, technology insertion, and environmental management.

Mr. Maddux has a passion for technology, knowing what makes things tick, and currently leads contractor work for the government and private sector in technology based and process improvement projects. His greater passion is mentoring young adults and speaking to youth about the technological wonders of the world in which we live, and stressing to them the importance of knowing who you are and where you are going.

During his advanced education career, Mr. Maddux earned a:

·        Bachelors in English, The University of Virginia, Charlottesville,
·        Certificate in Accounting, University of Maryland, Asian Division, Okinawa, Japan.
·        Certificate in Engineering Principles, Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT)
·        Certificate in Program Management, AFIT  
    
In his military career he was awarded the:
·        National Defense Service Medal
·        Air Force Commendation Medal, 3 Oak Leaf Clusters
·        Air Force Achievement Medal and,
·        Air National Guard Bureau “Minute Man Award”

For his fraternity the:  Omega Psi Phi Man Of The Year Award, Eta Iota Chapter, Oklahoma
